This octopus night light was designed to be something a bit different from the usual bedside lamp or standard kids’ night light. The detailed octopus artwork wraps all the way around the shade, with its flowing tentacles and textured patterns inspired by traditional William Morris designs. Once the lamp is switched on, the whole design comes to life with a soft warm glow that highlights all the fine detail in the print.
The light is bright enough to add a cosy atmosphere to a room, but soft enough to use as a bedside night light, reading light, or background lamp in the evening. It works really well on a shelf, side table, desk, or bedside cabinet, especially if you like unusual decor or marine-inspired artwork. But remember, it’s for ambient or mood lighting. It’s never going to illuminate your whole living room. But this is what good lighting design is all about. Discrete yet overlapping pools of light where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
Because this octopus night light is fully rechargeable, there’s no need to keep it plugged in while you use it. We use one of these lights in the alcove under our stairs where there’s no power and it can get quite gloomy. It just takes the edge off the darkness. The warm LED light creates a calm, relaxed feel that’s ideal for winding down in the evening.
Each lamp is 3D printed using a lithophane-style process which gives the surface its detailed textured look. Where the material is thin, you get almost white. Where it’s thicker, you get almost black. In daylight, the lamp has a clean sculptural appearance, but once illuminated the octopus design becomes much more dramatic and detailed.
