Rechargeable Lights – Battery Life

All my rechargeable lights are based around an LED puck.  This houses a ring of LEDs and the electronics to run everything.  It also has a built in 18650 battery to power the lights

On the ring of LEDs, there are a number of actual LED units.  There are a number of pure white LEDs and then red, green and blue.  You can choose the colour of the light using the remote control.

The colour you choose also determines the length of time that the battery will last before it needs recharging.  The battery will run down the fastest using pure white at full brightness. I’ve timed the light various times on different colours.  We have 2 lights in our lounge that we use to light up the fireplace when the wood burner isn’t on. These are set to a light orange or warm white.  Generally, we need to charge them once a week or so.  I’ve done some rough tests and a light on an orange colour at 50% brightness – plenty enough for ambient lighting – will last 24 hours and then some.

It’s quite rare that we’ll ever use them on white but I wanted to test them so I set up this simple experiment.  I fully charged one light and set up my phone on a stand to take a time lapse video with the light and a clock.

As you can see, the light stays on for just about 13 hours.  Watch the clock, but keep an eye on the light as well.  It’s not perfect as the light level in the office where I did the video changes.  But you can see that the brightness of the light is pretty stable for the whole 13 hours before it switches off rather than it just getting dimmer and dimmer.
