Imagine being able to peer beneath the surface of a tropical ocean, with sunlight streaming down through the water, colourful fish darting between the coral and a sea turtle swimming lazily past. That’s the little underwater world I’ve tried to capture with this Under the Sea Lamp.
There’s quite a lot going on in this design. A friendly-looking sea turtle takes centre stage, with dolphins swimming nearby, shoals of fish in the distance and a whole collection of colourful marine life around the coral reef. Look closely and you’ll spot clownfish, starfish and all sorts of little details hiding amongst the rocks.
One of my favourite parts is the sunlight coming through the water from above. When the lamp is switched on, those rays really come to life, giving the whole scene a sense of depth. It’s almost as though you’re looking through a window into the ocean.
I made this one with children’s bedrooms in mind, although I suspect there are plenty of grown-ups who’d enjoy it just as much. There’s something quite relaxing about an underwater scene, particularly when it’s softly illuminated in the evening.
Unlike my original cylindrical lights, this ocean night light has a separate, ribbed base in a lovely shade of ocean blue. I think the colour works particularly well with the artwork, and the combination gives it the appearance of a more conventional little table lamp.
It’s also completely rechargeable, which means you don’t need to worry about finding a convenient socket. Put it on a bedside table, a shelf or a chest of drawers, and move it somewhere else whenever you fancy. No trailing cables, which is particularly useful in a child’s bedroom.
A full charge gives around 12 hours or more of light, so a couple of hours charging every few days should be plenty for most people.
The included remote control gives you a choice of 13 LED colours and five brightness levels. You can also set the light to gently fade through the colours, although I think the white and blue settings work especially well with this particular design.
There are also 30 and 60 minute automatic switch-off timers. Handy if you’re using it as a bedtime light and don’t want it glowing away all night.
I think what makes this Under the Sea Lamp particularly appealing is that there’s always something new to notice. The little clownfish near the bottom, the dolphins appearing from the side or the tiny fish swimming through the coral. It’s the sort of scene that could easily become part of a bedtime story.
And when the room gets dark and the light comes on, that little underwater world really starts to shine.
The shade is 3D printed using PLA, a plant-based plastic commonly made from corn starch. I then print the artwork directly onto the surface using my UV printer, giving the finished light its colour and detail.
The original artwork for this design was created with the assistance of AI and then used as part of my process to create the finished light. Each light is personally made and finished by me.
