Howling Wolf Lamp

There’s something about the sound of a wolf howling in a forest that just seems to belong to the night, and that’s what I wanted to capture with this howling wolf lamp. Sitting beneath an arch of trees with its head raised to the sky, the wolf is surrounded by woodland detail that really comes to life when the light is switched on.

As you can see from the photos, the image wraps right the way round the light, so there’s something different to look at depending on where you are. The trees and woodland continue around the shade rather than the design simply being an image stuck on the front.

Whether you’re looking for a wolf lamp for your own home or a gift for a wolf lover, it’s a lovely way of bringing a little bit of the wild indoors — although thankfully this particular wolf is considerably quieter than the real thing.

Being rechargeable means that this wolf lamp is truly portable. There’s no need for trailing leads or to have it in a particular place just because that’s where a mains socket happens to be. At about 20cm tall and 10cm in diameter, it’s big enough for all the detail to be seen without taking over everything else you might have chosen for the room.

Adjust the colour and brightness to suit your home decor and you can have anything from a warm, subtle glow in the evening to something a little brighter. The light shining through the different thicknesses of the shade is what creates the image, bringing out all those little details in the trees, plants and howling wolf.

One charge of a couple of hours will see it working for around 13 hours on white at full brightness. On a lower brightness and/or different colours, you’ll see it lasting for several evenings before it needs charging again.

It comes with a handy remote control that lets you change the colour and brightness, set the light to fade through all the colours and even set it to switch itself off automatically after 30 or 60 minutes. So if you like a bit of light while you’re winding down at night, you don’t need to remember to get back out of bed to turn it off.

The shade is made from PLA, which is basically made from plant-based materials such as cornstarch rather than the oil-based plastics you might normally expect.

The image on the shade starts life as an AI-generated design before I convert it into a format similar to a black and white photograph that can be transferred to a 3D printer. The clever bit is that there isn’t actually any ink or paint involved. The picture is created entirely by changing the thickness of the material as the shade is printed. Thinner areas allow more light through and thicker areas allow less, which is what produces all of the shading and detail you can see when the lamp is switched on.
