There’s something wonderfully endearing about Highland cows. Perhaps it’s the enormous shaggy coats, the long fringes that seem to make seeing where they’re going rather difficult, or simply the way they can stand in the middle of a Scottish hillside looking completely unbothered by the world around them.
Whatever it is, they have a character all of their own.
I’ve created two versions of my Highland Cow Lamp, each with a slightly different take on these unmistakable Scottish animals. You can choose your favourite or, if you can’t decide, have them both.
The Highland Cow
The first design features a magnificent adult Highland cow standing amongst pink and purple heather, with distant Scottish mountains and a soft evening sky behind it.
I’ve tried to capture all the things that make these animals so distinctive. The sweeping horns, the wonderfully untidy fringe and that thick, golden-brown coat that looks as though it could withstand just about anything the Scottish weather might throw at it.
The artwork has quite a lot of fine detail, particularly in the strands of hair, and when the lamp is switched on, the warm light brings out all those lovely golden tones.
The Highland Calf
The second version features a Highland calf, standing in a similar Scottish landscape with mountains, heather and a softly coloured sky.
This little fellow has a rather different personality. No impressive horns just yet, but plenty of fluffy hair, oversized ears and a face that seems to be wondering what you’re looking at.
I think the calf has a particularly appealing expression. There’s something almost comical about that enormous fringe, and the warm colours give the whole scene a gentle, cosy feel when illuminated.
Choose One or Have the Pair
Both designs are available individually, so you can pick whichever appeals to you most. But I’ve also included an option to buy the two together at a discounted price.
I rather like the idea of the adult and calf sitting together on a shelf or sideboard, although they’d work equally well in different rooms.
Rechargeable and Easy to Move Around
Each Highland Cow Lamp stands approximately 23cm tall and is completely rechargeable. There’s no need to leave it plugged into a socket, so you can put it wherever you think it looks best.
A bedside table, a bookshelf, a windowsill or that little corner of the living room that could do with some gentle light. And if you change your mind, simply pick it up and move it.
A full charge provides around 12 hours or more of illumination, so a couple of hours charging every few days should keep things going nicely.
Each light comes with its own remote control, giving you a choice of 13 LED colours, five brightness levels and a setting that gently fades between colours. There are also 30 and 60 minute automatic switch-off timers.
Personally, I think the warm white setting works particularly well with these designs. It brings out the golden colours of the cows’ coats and gives the Scottish landscape a lovely evening glow.
Whether you have Scottish connections, love Highland cattle or just appreciate an animal with a particularly impressive hairstyle, I hope these lights bring a little bit of the Highlands into your home.
I’m rather pleased with how both have turned out. And I genuinely couldn’t tell you which one I prefer.
The shade is 3D printed using PLA, a plant-based plastic commonly made from corn starch. I then print the artwork directly onto the surface using my UV printer, giving the finished light its colour and detail.
The original artwork for this design was created with the assistance of AI and then used as part of my process to create the finished light. Each light is personally made and finished by me.
