Mother and Baby Highland Cow

I’ve always had a soft spot for a baby highland cow. There’s something about that slightly scruffy fringe and the way they stick close to their mum that just feels calm and reassuring. When I sat down to design this light, that’s what I wanted to capture – not something flashy, just something gentle and comforting.

This is a 3D printed, William Morris inspired mother and baby highland cow nightlight. The design wraps all the way around the outside of the cylinder, so as you turn it, you notice different details in the foliage and the landscape. It stands 200mm tall and 100mm in diameter, so it’s substantial enough to make an impression, but still easy to place on a bedside table, shelf or sideboard.

I took inspiration from William Morris’ love of nature and flowing patterns, but kept the focus on the cows themselves – especially the baby highland cow. When the light is off, you can see the layered texture in the print. When it’s on, the details come through more clearly, with the calf and its mum softly illuminated against the countryside background.

It’s fully rechargeable, so there are no cables to deal with. That means you’re not limited by plug sockets – you can put it wherever it feels right and move it around whenever you fancy a change. It lasts up to 24 hours between charges, depending on the colour setting you choose from the included remote control, which makes it handy for evenings, nurseries or just as a low, relaxed light while you wind down.  White lasts for around 14 hours, I’ve also tested it on the warm white, light orange setting and I got 26 hours from that.

It comes with the remote control to choose from 12 different colours plus white.  You can adjust the brightness, set it to fade through all the colours or set a timer for the light to go off after 30 or 60 minutes.

For me, this baby highland cow light is about creating a small pocket of calm in your home. It’s not trying to be over the top. It’s just a quietly detailed piece that happens to glow – and that you can make part of your space in whatever way suits you.
