There’s something about a hare sitting under a full moon that just works. I’ve made a few versions of my Moon Gazing Hare over the years, but with the new printer I wanted to go back to the idea and create something with a lot more detail and colour.
The hare sits quietly on the hillside, looking up at a huge full moon, with the countryside stretching away behind him. I particularly like that he isn’t doing anything. He’s just stopped for a while to look at the moon. I think we could probably all do with doing a bit more of that.
I 3D print the cylinder in white PLA and then print the artwork directly onto the surface using my UV printer. That means the Moon Gazing Hare night light looks like a detailed illustration during the day, rather than something that only really works when it’s switched on. Turn the LEDs on in the evening and it changes completely. The moon lights up, the landscape takes on a softer glow and the hare stands out against the night sky.
Because it’s rechargeable, you can put it pretty much wherever you think it looks right. Keep your hare night light next to the bed, put it on a shelf in the living room or move it somewhere completely different tomorrow. You don’t need to find a convenient socket or have a cable running across the furniture. A full charge gives around 12 hours or more of use, and a couple of hours charging every few days should keep you going nicely.
The included remote control lets you choose from 13 LED colours and five brightness levels. You can also have the light slowly fade through the different colours, and there are 30 and 60 minute timers if you want to fall asleep with it on without running the battery down overnight.
At around 23cm tall, it’s big enough for all the detail in the landscape to come through while still being small enough to sit comfortably on a bedside table or shelf.
I think Moon Gazing Hare works particularly well if you like wildlife and countryside-inspired interiors without wanting anything too twee. It’s a simple scene, really – a hare, a landscape and a very big moon – but I think that’s probably why I like it.
Sometimes it’s nice just to sit and look at the moon.
The original artwork for this design was created with the assistance of AI and then used as part of my process to create the finished light. Each light is personally made and finished by me.
