What we have here is the culmination of several changes to a simple inital design to bring you this retro table lamp is a really rich and warm caramel or amber colour. It features 6 birch plywood legs that hug the contour of the vase shaped diffuser. These are stained a medium oak colour which just adds to the warmth of the light even when switched off.
It stands at around 35cm tall and is around 12cm in diameter. Powered by low voltage USB, the LED disc inside is incredibly efficient consuming around 2w of power even on full brightness. But, using the remote control you can also select the colour of light that you want. The caramel diffuser means that the colours aren’t exactly as you would expect. They range from a cosy warm white through greens, blues, reds and pinks that add to any lighting scheme you have in any room.
Being USB powered, this table lamp is ultra energy efficient and will even run from a power bank for many hours if you want to put it somewhere that doesn’t have a nearby socket.
When I first designed this retro table lamp it had 3 legs and the diffuser was a smooth white. But it didn’t quite have the retro feel that I wanted so I kept going. For some of my lights I use a really nice caramel or amber coloured material so the first thing I did was try that. It was closer, but it still lacked something.
Purely by chance, I was testing a new version of the legs and added them to a light that I already had. 6 legs! That was what it needed.
The initial prototypes also needed gluing at the top to keep the legs in place. I don’t like using glue so I tweaked that so that the top of the legs wrap over the top of the diffuser and that was another definite win.
Lastly, I wan out of pure white LEDs but I’m impatient and wanted to see what this table lamp would look like so I used a multi-coloured LED disk.
Note that the cable is 1.5m and will plug into any USB adapter (not supplied).
