A garden can look wonderfully inviting on a clear winter evening: the path has a gentle glow, a few lights pick out the edge of a planter, and the dark corners feel less forgotten. Then comes a week of grey skies, rain and early sunsets, and it is fair to wonder: do solar lights work in winter?
The short answer is yes, but usually not in quite the same way they do in July. A solar light can still charge and switch on during winter, even when the sun is hidden behind cloud. It simply has less daylight to work with, and the light it gathers is weaker. It feels more natural than trying to make a handful of tiny solar stakes do the work of a proper outdoor light.
A quick check if your lights stop working
If a solar light has been reliable and suddenly goes dark, start with the simple things. Clean the panel, check the switch, move it into a brighter position and give it a few daylight hours to recharge. Make sure nearby outdoor lighting is not shining directly onto the panel at night, as this can confuse the built-in sensor and stop it switching on.
If it still does not work after a run of brighter days, the rechargeable battery may be reaching the end of its life. Many solar lights use replaceable rechargeable batteries, though you should always check the product instructions for the correct type and capacity. Never swap in a standard disposable battery.
